A 45-year-old tree has been targeted by vandals.
The lime tree in Field Place, Worthing, has had seven holes drilled into it near its base.
The council also said it believes an unknown substance has been poured into these holes to cause more damage.

A spokesman for Worthing Borough Council said: "Sadly, as a result, the health of the tree, which is located near the rear garden boundary of properties in Melrose Avenue, has been significantly impacted.
"We are greatly concerned for the health of the trees at Field Place, and have begun preparing a Tree Protection Order to ensure its continued care.
"The incident has been reported to the police and a letter has also been sent to residents of the area."
People have been urged to report any vandalism to Sussex Police by quoting the crime reference number 47240127890.
Residents in Field Place and visitors to green spaces are also being urged to remain vigilant and report any suspicious activity.
