Ann Summers says it is committed to staying in Brighton after concerns that it may close its city centre store.

Worries that the shop may close arose after a “To let” sign appeared over the store this week, suggesting that it could shut imminently.

But shop bosses say they are determined the maintain their presence in the city with an updated look to their shop – even if it means moving from Western Road.

A spokeswoman for the store said: “As part of the normal course of business, our stores are subject to lease terms, which occasionally results in new site openings, renovations, relocations, and store closures.

“We have no plans to close our store in Brighton and are keen to keep our presence in the city, with plans to invest in a store refit in line with our ongoing store refurbishment programme, where to date we have invested in over a third of our existing stores.

“With our lease up for renewal, we are hopeful to meet suitable terms to remain in our current location.

“Whilst we do not know what the future plans are for the site, we will keep the local residents updated once the information is available to us."

The Argus understands that negotiations on the future of the Western Road site are ongoing but that Ann Summers is keen to remain in the city even if it needs to move from the unit.

Poundland in North Street recently closed while other stores including Kurt Geiger in East Street have also shut their doors.

Despite previously operating a number of stores in Sussex, Ann Summers now only has two physical stores in the county in Brighton and Crawley.

Adverts for the 2,457 square foot unit were listed on letting websites with an annual rent of £132,500.

The unit is described as “well sized” and in a “prime location”.

The worries come after a number of city centre shops have closed in recent months.
