Roadworks on the A27 are set to begin tonight.

National Highways said essential bridge repairs will take place between Havant  and Emsworth, on the Sussex border, for three consecutive months.

The work on the bridge which goes over Wade Court Road will be carried out in two phases and will involve overnight and full weekend closures.

The aim of the work is to replace bridge joints and waterproof, resurface and replace the central concrete barrier.

Throughout the work there will be narrow lanes with a 50mph speed limit in place. 

Phase one of the work, which begins tonight, will see the eastbound carriageway closed overnight to install the narrow lanes.

On Tuesday, the westbound carriageway way will be closed overnight to install narrow lanes on that side of the road.

These will both be closed again for the narrow lanes to be removed on August 8 and August 9.

The westbound carriageway will then be closed each night for work from tomorrow until August 9.

The closures will be in place from 9pm until 6am the following morning.

The eastbound overnight closures start this Friday for one night, July 27 for two nights and August 5 for one night.

In phase two, National Highways said there will be a full weekend closure on the eastbound carriageway from September 13 until September 16. 

There will then be four overnight closures from September 16 until September 19, with each closure starting at 9pm and ending at 6am.

The westbound will be closed for the entire weekend of September 20 until September 23.

This will then be closed overnight only from September 23 until September 26.

A spokesman for National Highways said: "To extend the life of the bridge, we'll be carrying out essential maintenance and repairs which includes replacement of waterproofing, bridge joints, safety barrier and surfacing.

"This work is weather dependent so needs to take place during the summer months and will be carried out under a combination of narrow lanes and full weekend closures.

"Drivers should plan ahead, allow extra during their journeys and follow the diversion route signposted."
