A longstanding MP has landed a top spot in the cabinet.

Peter Kyle was re-elected on Friday for the Hove and Portslade seat with 52 per cent of the vote and on Saturday he was in Westminster for the first cabinet meeting of the new Labour government.

But the new front-bench MP said the role will not stop him taking up constituency issues as well.

Mr Kyle is serving as the Secretary of State for Science, Innovation and Technology, the same role he was a shadow for in the opposition government.

He has previously expressed an interest in AI technology and developing clear regulation for new technologies.

He told the BBC after election "Unlocking the benefits of artificial intelligence is personal” after finding new AI medical technologies which are being developed could have saved his mother, who died of lung cancer which was detected too late.

The new front-bencher has already stepped into action, meeting top figures at the Department for Science, Innovation and Technology and appearing in F1 commentator Martin Brundle's grid walk for the British Grand Prix on Sunday.

Mr Kyle told The Argus: "Everything I do, I do for the residents of Hove, Hangleton and Portslade.

"I am so honoured that they have re-elected me and that they continue to trust in my ambition for this city.

"I will still be around and accessible here but I am also keen to get stuck into my cabinet role and make residents proud that their MP is part of Keir's team for change."

He has previously served as a shadow minister for schools, Northern Ireland and youth justice.
