It was a game of ups, downs, more downs, and then a win in the penalties to finish the game...

Hundreds descended on the Brighton fan zone in Valley Gardens to watch the game on the big screen.

Spirits were high within the event's fortified boundaries as Southgate's 11 put up a fight for the place in the semi final - which they secured after battling it out in a penalty shootout.

But it was a nail biting watch to get to this point. It took until the 75th minute for the first goal to hit the back of the net with Switzerland's Breel Embolo making it 1-0.

Fans in Brighton could hardly watch the screen as England tried to claw it back and Bukayo Saka made it equal in the 80th minute.

It is a good thing drinks were plentiful at the fan zone as almost all of them ended up being lobbed into the air during the celebrations.

Security guards even had to hold fans back as barriers were pushed over amid the celebrations.

Fans calmed down although the drinks-throwing did not slow down and continued up to the 90-minute whistle and into extra time.

Penalties followed shortly after and the crowd erupted into joy as Cole Palmer scored the first one straight into the back of the net.

The final penalty, scored by Trent Alexander-Arnold was followed by a drunken rendition of the unofficial national anthem Sweet Caroline.
