A major road is set to shut for a week later this month.

There is likely to be major disruption when Bear Road in Brighton closes for resurfacing.

Engineers will be laying new tarmac between July 22 and July 26.

Councillor Jacob Taylor, who represents Moulsecoomb and Bevendean ward on Brighton and Hove City Council, said: "I realise this will cause disruption and transport officers will manage as best as possible."

Newmarket Road, near the bottom of Bear Road, will turn from a one-way road into a two-way road to ensure people living nearby can still drive to their homes.

Parking suspensions will be in place so cars can pass.

The junctions of Riley Road and Ewhurst Road will also be closed. All closures will run between 7.30am and 6pm.

It comes as part of a £4.3 million investment from the council to resurface more than 40 roads this year.

Councillor Trevor Muten, cabinet member for transport, parking and public realm, said: “We know that residents desperately want better and safer roads across the city and we’re pleased to be rolling out this major programme to improve things.

“Potholes are a significant pain for bus users, cyclists and motorists and this council is mobilising to do everything we can to get them fixed.”
