A pub landlord died in an Airbnb filled with illegal drugs during a post-pandemic holiday in Portugal, an inquest has heard.

Adam Odling and his partner Sarah Curr were found dead in an apartment near the cathedral in the centre of Porto on January 27, 2023. Police recovered drugs including heroin, cocaine and ecstasy from the address.

An inquest into Sarah's death found she had experimented with heroin and died of opiate toxicity.

A separate inquest will be held for Adam, 49, who was the landlord of the Dover Castle pub in Southover Street, Hanover, Brighton, at the time.

The pub closed temporarily following his death and floral tributes were left in the window.

The inquest in Truro heard that Sarah, 46, grew up in Cornwall, where her father was a doctor, but was working at King's College in London and living in Blackheath at the time of her death.

She had been a teaching nurse until the Covid-19 pandemic struck when she returned to frontline work in a Nightingale hospital where she contracted Covid in late 2022.

She and Adam went to Porto for a short break after her recovery.

Cornwall assistant coroner Guy Davies said Sarah was not a regular drug taker and was "opiate naive".

He said it was not known how or why the drugs were obtained but there was no third party involvement in the deaths.

Mr Davies said Sarah had a "very demanding career with the NHS" and had been on a weekend break in Porto when she and Mr Adam died.

Sarah’s sister Rachel told the inquest that Sarah worked in A&E in London and also taught nursing at King's College in London before joining the front line in the pandemic but was struck down by Covid herself at Christmas 2022.
