People are being warned about online holiday scams.

Hastings Police said people should be vigilant when booking holidays and to check their authenticity.

A spokesman for Sussex Police said: "Be on the lookout for holiday frauds. If an offer looks or sounds too good to be true, it probably is."

In advice to the public, police warned people to be careful of phishing emails and sham giveaways.

These will ask travellers for their personal and payment details, and will often look similar to legitimate sites.

People have also been warned to avoid fake accommodation deals, which is when a scammer advertises last-minute cancellations that are heavily discounted and asks for an upfront deposit.

To avoid holiday fraud, Sussex Police said holidaymakers should protect themselves by doing research, not clicking on links in emails or texts and scrutinising contact details.

People should also pay by credit card for greater protection and to not book a holiday if they feel rushed or pressured.

If someone thinks an email is suspicious, they can send it to report@phishing.gov.uk.

People can also forward texts to 7726 to check if they are malicious.

Victims of  fraud are urged to report this directly to Action fraud online or by calling 0300 123 2040
