A man wearing a woolly hat and scarf in summer pushed over a seven-year-old boy as he walked out of a city centre shop.
The child was walking with his family as they left the Morrisons store in St James's Street in Kemp Town, Brighton, when he was pushed over by a man walking past.
Sussex Police are now searching for the man and appealing for witnesses to the incident.
A spokesman said: "A seven-year-old boy was walking with his family leaving the store.
"As he walked, he was pushed over by a man walking in the other direction, causing him to fall backwards.
"Officers are investigating and want any pedestrians or witnesses in the area who saw what happened to come forward."
The man was of large build and estimated to be in his 20s with a brown beard.
He was wearing a blue woollen hat, a light blue or grey shirt, dark blue scarf, blue lanyard and dark trousers.
The incident happened at about 7.15pm on June 5.
Witnesses or anyone with information is asked to report it to Sussex Police online or on 101, quoting serial 1448 of 05/06.
