A gym is allowed to continue trading at the site of a former ambulance station.

Gain Strength Therapy, which bought the building in Dursley Road, Eastbourne, last year, has been given retrospective permission from Eastbourne Borough Council to continue operating a fitness and wellness centre there.

It comes after the two-storey building was extensively refurbished last year for its new use.

The gym is now welcoming customers, who have to be members to access the site.

The building has a fully equipped gym, yoga studios, treatment rooms and changing rooms, with a maximum of 15 people on the site at a time.

It is open from 6am until 8pm and specialises in one-to-one personal training services.

A planning officer had raised concerns about the parking.

A spokesman for the council said: "The lack of parking available for this site is far from ideal. The current agreement the applicant has with the neighbouring property currently provides several parking spaces, but these may not always be available.

"Therefore, the lack of parking available for staff and service users is far from ideal but due to the size of the site and the number of attendees when the site is at maximum capacity and taking into consideration that this business functions effectively, an objection due to lack of parking would be difficult to justify.

"However, the applicant will need to make provisions to provide adequate cycle parking for staff and service users within the site."

The council said the gym does not "negatively impact the amenity of the occupiers of surrounding properties" and does not affect the character and appearance of the area.
