People are being warned about an insect which can cause painful rashes.

Brown tail moths are not a threat to human health but can cause a painful rash if they come into contact with skin at the caterpillar stage.

The caterpillars have spiked and barbed hairs which can go through skin and cause an irritant reaction similar to severe nettle rash.

Hastings Borough Council has issued a warning about them and said people affected by the caterpillars may feel discomfort which should subside after a few hours.

If other symptoms develop they should seek medical advice.

Asthmatics and hay fever sufferers should avoid inhaling the hairs as these may cause breathing difficulties.

A council spokesman said: "Brown tail moths are often seen in Hastings and do not pose any threat to human health.

"However, when they are at the caterpillar stage, typically between May and early July, the caterpillars can cause a painful rash if they come into contact with skin.

"The discomfort should subside after a few hours. A warm bath, with the application of calamine lotion or antihistamine cream may ease the itching."
