Two men say they were sprayed in the face with a corrosive substance while walking in the city centre in the early hours of the morning.

Both men are recovering from their injuries after being sprayed with the substance at around midnight on Wednesday last week.

Jamal Monan, 27, has since been charged with throwing fluid with intent to burn, as well as drug offences, possession of a knife and assaulting an emergency worker.

The two men, aged 20 and 32, say there were sprayed in the face in New Road and Oxford Street in Brighton between midnight and 12.20am on Wednesday, June 12.

The 32-year-old, from Leicester, is receiving ongoing treatment.

On Friday, June 14, Monan, of Riverside, in Newhaven,  was arrested and has since been charged with two counts of throwing fluid with intent to burn or cause grievous bodily harm, possession of a knife in a public place, being concerned in the supply of heroin, being concerned in the supply of crack cocaine, and for assaulting an emergency worker.

He was remanded in custody and will appear at crown court on July 15.

Sussex Police DI Rob Lewis, said: "We understand that these incidents are deeply concerning to the community and want to reassure that swift action has been taken, resulting in an arrest and a suspect charged.

"Our investigation is ongoing, and we urge anyone who witnessed these incidents or has any information to contact the police."
