Motorists faced nearly four miles of queues and delays of more than an hour after a crash on the A27.
People trying to get from Portslade to Shoreham yesterday faced stop-start traffic after the accident which happened at around 9am.
The driver had a lucky escape after hitting the central reservation barrier but the road was closed westbound between the A283 and A2025 for hours while contractors from National Highways worked to fix the damaged bridge parapet.
Police said there were no injuries.
Then at about 1pm, firefighters were called to a three-vehicle crash on the eastbound side of the A27 near the Southwick tunnel.
The smash involved two cars and a motorbike.
A fire service spokeswoman said: “Upon arrival firefighters carried out first aid before leaving a casualty in the care of crews from South East Coast Ambulance Service.”
It was a bleak weekend on the road as two motorists were killed in the east of the county.

In the early hours of Saturday police were called to the A22 Polegate Road in Hailsham after a motorbike crashed into a roundabout.
The motorcyclist, a 34-year-old from Eastbourne, was pronounced dead at the scene.
Sussex Police said his next of kin has been informed and is being supported by specialist officers.

The same morning, a Porsche driver died in a crash with a BMW.
The collision happened on the A26 in Little Horsted, near Uckfield, shortly after 11am and involved a blue Porsche Boxter and a grey BMW X1.
The Porsche driver was a 57-year-old man from South Chailey. Police said is next of kin have been informed about his death and are being supported by specialist officers.
The BMW driver suffered serious injuries and was taken to hospital.
A force spokesman said: "Investigating officers are keen to speak to anyone who witnessed the collision or who may have captured any footage.
