A couple who moved to Spain are blaming “anti-British” residents after their car was vandalised.

The pair, who moved to Marbella four years ago, had breakfast at exclusive restaurant Nobu and left to find their car covered in pink spray paint.

After hearing about another incident in which a car with a British number plate was also supposedly targeted they believe they were the target of “anti-British vandalism”.

The couple, who moved from Horsham to Marbella, said they were welcomed by “very friendly” residents when they first arrived in Spain.

They said: “It seems to be that cars with English registration plates are being targeted as part of the feeling that there are too many Brits in Spain.

“We think it’s quite sad – there is so much building happening now and housing is being sold to tourists but mainly where we are it has been to Russians, not Brits.

“Marbella is a lovely place to live and the Spanish are normally very friendly.

“We never expected that someone would do something like this to us just because we’re British.”

The couple, who worked in business consultancy and wish to remain anonymous, said a friend cleaned the paint off their car for €250 after the incident. They believe the repair would have cost four times as much if they had taken it to a garage.

It comes after a potential clamp down on tourists in the region was halted last month.

According to the Daily Record an Andalusian government reject a potential visitor tax which would have seen tourists in Marbella facing increased costs.
