A man has been arrested on suspicion of drink driving after allegedly fleeing the scene of a car crash.

A high-risk missing person search was launched yesterday to find the driver of a car after it was found embedded in undergrowth by the side of the A22.

Now, Sussex Police say that a man was taken to hospital and subsequently arrested. He has been bailed pending further investigation.

Hailsham Road near Polegate was closed for several hours yesterday evening after emergency services found that car in undergrowth at around 9pm on Friday.

A missing person search was launched over fears that the driver of the car may have been seriously hurt.

Since then, a 53-year-old man was located uninjured but was taken to hospital for precautionary checks.

He has since been arrested on suspicion of drink driving and possession of a Class B drug with intent to supply.

He has been bailed pending further enquiries.

The damaged vehicle was removed overnight and the road was re-opened this morning.
