A village centre and garages will be destroyed to make way for new homes and a community centre.

Plans for 28 affordable flats and the community centre in Portslade were approved this afternoon, with the ground set to be broken soon.

They were approved despite 26 objection letters including concerns about the increase in parking and fears the area might not be able to accommodate the families which move into these homes.

Also included within the plans for the 397 square metre community centre is an outdoor play court with a multi-use surface for different sports.

It is a council development under its New Homes for Neighbourhoods programme which has already created 72 new homes in the city.

Councillors considered how the new community centre would operate, the impact of the development on nearby residents and the standard of the affordable housing.

Planning officers said the buildings were designed to reduce impact on neighbouring services and were designed in a way which complemented the nearby landscape. 33 new trees will also be planted.

A change was made to the hours of operation at the community centre before plans were approved.
