Caravans have increased at an encampment on a village green.

Nine vehicles, including vans and caravans, are camped on Goring Gap in Marine Drive.

The camp has been stationed there since May 25 and is made up of vans, caravans, cars, and a tent.

Pet hutches, milk churns and quad bikes are also present at the site.

A bush behind one caravan was full of black bin bags, plastic bags and other litter.

The Argus: Litter was seen discarded in the bushes near the encampment

Kevin Jenkins, Conservative councillor for Goring, has called for council action.

Cllr Jenkins said: “Since the arrival of the recent group of travellers on Goring Greenswards, Marine Drive, Worthing, I have received numerous emails and social media comments from disgruntled residents and visitors that their ability to enjoy this open public space has once again been ruined by the arrival of yet another group of travellers.

“The encampment totals nine plus caravans and vehicles and assorted paraphernalia and has taken over a large swathe of the Greenswards in an area where families traditionally gather to hold get-togethers and BBQs and ruined the long May bank holiday weekend for many.

“These incursions are now too regular and many are asking what the council, as land owners, are going to do to prevent further incursion, especially as we go into the key summer months when so many families and visitors will be looking to visit and enjoy this area.”

A West Sussex County Council spokeswoman said: “There are currently nine caravans parked at this location.

“All have been served with a notice requiring them to vacate the land.

“Should they fail to do so, court proceedings will commence.

“We will continue to monitor the site together with Sussex Police. Please visit our website for any updates.”

A spokesman for Sussex Police said: “Police were made aware of an unauthorised encampment at Goring Gap, Marine Drive, Goring on Friday, May 24.

“We are working closely with West Sussex County Council to monitor and resolve the situation.

“The public is encouraged to report any crime or suspicious activity to us online or by calling 101. Always call 999 in an emergency.”
