A truck driver who was found dead in his flat was stabbed in the chest multiple times, an inquest has heard.

Andrew Rowland-Stuart was pronounced dead at his 15th-floor flat on Monday, May 27 at 7.30pm.

An inquest into his death was opened this morning in Horsham. It heard that Mr Rowland Stuart, 70, was stabbed multiple times in the chest and abdomen.

His wife has been charged with murder.

Senior coroner Penelope Schofield opened and suspended the inquest until after criminal proceedings.

She said: "I am satisfied this is an unnatural death and needs to proceed to inquest.

"This will be suspended pending outcome of the criminal investigation."

Mr Rowland-Stuart’s wife, Joanna Rowland-Stuart, also 70, appeared at Lewes Crown Court charged with murder.

The retired LGBTQ+ rights worker was arrested at the flat in Lavender Street, Brighton, and appeared in court yesterday via video link.

She was asked to confirm her name via a British Sign Language interpreter, as she is deaf, but experienced issues as the battery of her cochlear hearing implant had died.

Judge Christine Laing KC confirmed her plea and trial preparation hearing for July 19.

The court heard that a psychiatrist will be instructed.

The judge also voiced concerns over Rowland-Stuart’s mobility issues.

A trial date was provisionally arranged for November 25. The location has not been confirmed.
