A child was blown out to sea on an inflatable toy.
The youngster and a man were on the toy when they were taken out by the tide off East Beach in Selsey on Monday.
Selsey Coastguard Rescue Team and the Selsey Inshore Lifeboat were called shortly after 2.30pm.
A fisherman from the area rescued the two people and along with the lifeboat managed to get them back to shore.

A spokesman for Selsey Coastguard Rescue Team said: "Once safely ashore safety advice was given and no medical assistance was needed.
"Blow-up toys and airbeds are designed for pools, not the sea where they can easily be blown offshore."
People have been advised to closely supervise their children at the beach and make sure they stay nearby.
People should only swim between red and yellow flags and should follow advice from lifeguards on duty.
In an emergency out at sea or along the coast, beachgoers should call 999 and ask for the coastguard.
