A warning has been issued with heavy rain and lightning expected.
The Met Office yellow thunderstorm warning is in place for all of Sussex from 12pm until 11.59pm tonight.
The national weather service said spray and sudden flooding could lead to difficult driving conditions and some road closures.
A spokesman for the Met Office said: "Where flooding or lightning strikes occur, there is a chance of delays and some cancellations to train and bus services.
"There is a slight chance that power cuts could occur and other services to some homes and businesses could be lost.
"There is a small chance that homes and businesses could be flooded quickly, with damage to some buildings from floodwater, lightning strikes, hail or strong winds."
Sussex is included in the warning which covers all of the South East and East Anglia.
The weather service said people in yellow weather warning should check the details of the forecast and consider taking steps to minimise impacts for you and your household.
The spokesman added: "Even in a yellow warning area, people will see disruption to a greater or lesser extent, so it's important to check the details and see which steps you could take to prepare."
