Two former members of staff at a secondary school have been arrested on suspicion of forming an inappropriate relationship with a pupil.

The men who previously worked at Cavendish School in Eastbourne have been arrested as part of an investigation into grooming, abuse of a position of trust and possessing indecent images of children.

The school says it is working closely with Sussex Police.

A 59-year-old man was arrested on suspicion of abuse of position of trust and possession of indecent images of children.

A 52-year-old man, also from Eastbourne, was arrested on suspicion of arranging to meet a girl under 16 following grooming.

Both men have been released on bail.

The alleged offences are reported to have happened in 2019.

A Sussex Police spokesman said: "We are working closely with the school, which is fully supporting the investigation, and neither member of staff remains in employment at the school."

A spokesman for the school added: "We are aware that Sussex Police are investigating reports of non-recent, inappropriate relationships between two former members of staff and a former secondary phase pupil at Cavendish School. The alleged offences are reported to have taken place in 2019.

"We are working closely with the police and are fully supporting the investigation.

"To reassure the Cavendish community, safeguarding practices in the school are deemed as effective, which was again verified in our recent Ofsted inspection (September 2023)

"As this is an ongoing police investigation, we are unable to provide any further details or comment further."
