A yellow weather warning for thunderstorms has been issued.
Thunder and heavy rain are expected across Sussex between 11pm tonight and 6am tomorrow.
The Met Office said to expect spray and sudden flooding which could lead to difficult driving conditions.
A spokesman said: “Thunderstorms are expected to move north west across some parts later this evening and overnight bringing spells of heavy rain accompanied by frequent lightning with potential for 15 to 25 mm of rain to fall in one or two hours in a few places.
“Hail and gusty winds may also affect a few spots.”

The Met Office said bus and rail services could be affected and there is a small chance that power cuts could occur.
There is also a small chance that homes and businesses could be flooded quickly, with damage to some buildings from floodwater, lightning strikes, hail or strong winds.
Thunderstorms are expected to impact across the south including London, as well as further South West towards Devon and Bristol.
