A café has closed until further notice after a scaffolding lorry crashed into the front window and caused "substantial" damage.

Metrodeco in Upper St James's Street, Brighton, was evacuated last Wednesday morning shortly before 11am when the incident happened.

East Sussex Fire and Rescue Service and Sussex Police attended the scene and a cordon was put in place around the scaffolding lorry, which had smashed into the building.

No injuries were reported and no arrests were made.

The café is yet to reopen as a result of the damage caused.

A spokesman for Metrodeco said: "On April 24 a lorry crashed into the building of our lovely café.

"Fortunately no one was hurt but the damage caused was substantial, resulting in the café closing until further notice.

"We are working closely with Brighton and Hove Building Control, surveyors and a building company to make sure the café is brought back to its beautiful self as soon as possible.

"We apologise for any inconvenience caused and thank you all for the lovely messages since the incident."

Since the announcement of the temporary closure, a number of businesses from the area have shown support for the eatery.

The owner of Terre à Terre in East Street, Brighton, said: "Oh no so sorry to hear this. Glad everyone is ok."

Nanima Asian Kitchen and Café in St George's Road, Kemp Town said: " So sorry to hear this. Really hope all gets sorted and you’re up and running again real soon."

Brighton Wonderland, which owns two Alice in Wonderland-themed houses across the city said: "I’m so sorry, bless you all and your customers will be ready and waiting."

One customer, who visited the café during her city break in Brighton last year, said: "I was a guest at Red Brighton Blue in March last year and I used my breakfast voucher at your café every morning of the four nights spent in Brighton.

"All the best to you. I plan to come back soon."
