A new two-storey sixth-form building has been approved.

The education facility will be part of St Oscar Romero Catholic School in Goring Street, Worthing.

According to the proposals, which were approved by Adur and Worthing Councils, the new building, which aims to be a "modern and inviting new educational block", will be within the school grounds.

It will have six classrooms as well as a study room, toilet facilities, an office, a common room and a canteen.

The building will also be able to accommodate for up to 120 students, however the sixth form will have provision for up to 200 students by also utilising the main school building.

The plans, submitted by the school, also state that sixth-form students studying subjects such as music, drama and science will attend lessons in the previous building that already has these facilities.

The sixth form will also cover A-Level choices which are not frequently offered in the area, including religious studies which the school has an expertise in.

Speaking about the development, the Catholic school said: "The facility will fulfil an urgent requirement for sixth-form education within Goring-by-Sea.

"This structure will optimally utilise an unused segment of the school site by repurposing the site of the school caretaker's cottage and gardens, which has been identified as unsuitable for commercial sale or any other use.

"Being a Catholic school, the strong Catholic/Christian ethos of the school underpins everything they do.

"Although sixth formers would be distinct from the rest of the school, opportunities for them to be involved in the life of the school will be maximised.

"This includes leading charity events, volunteering, mentoring and supporting younger students. This not only gives sixth formers a strong sense of identity but builds self-esteem, resilience and strong moral values."

So far the school said there have already been 120 applications for a sixth form space from both internal students and people who have attended other secondary schools in the area.

The school said it is expecting more applications over the next few weeks.

The plans were approved on April 11.
