The candidates for two upcoming by-elections in Brighton have been confirmed.
Voters will head to the polls to elect new ward councillors for Queen’s Park and Kemptown on Thursday, May 2, 2024.
The by-elections will fill the vacancies caused by the resignations of Chandni Mistry and Bharti Gajjar.
The candidates for the by-elections are:
Queen’s Park:
Sunny Choudhury – Conservative Party
Milla Gauge – Labour Party
Dominique Hall – Liberal Democrats
Adrian Hart – Brighton and Hove Independents
Kemptown:
Robert James Brown – Liberal Democrats
Gary Farmer – Brighton and Hove Independents
Jamie Gillespie – Independent candidate
Théresa Ann Mackey – Labour Party
Josephine Victoria O’Carroll - Conservative Party
If you live in Queen’s Park or Kemptown and would like to vote in the upcoming by-elections, you must be registered to vote by midnight on April 16.
If you are not already registered, or if you have recently moved to a new address, visit gov.uk/registertovote to register.
If you cannot get to a polling station on the day, you can also apply for a postal or proxy vote.
People must apply for a postal vote by 5pm on April 17 at the latest.
You can also ask someone you trust to vote on your behalf – this is known as a proxy vote. You should apply for a proxy vote by 5pm on April 24 or change existing proxy arrangements by 5pm on April 17.
Don’t forget photo ID
Last year, the government brought in new legislation which requires voters to show photo identification when voting at polling stations.
This means people must bring photo ID to vote in the upcoming by-elections.
If you do not have a valid form of photo ID, you can apply for a free Voter Authority Certificate (VAC) online. The deadline for the council to receive your VAC application for use at the May by-elections is 5pm on Wednesday, April 24.
