Runners are preparing for an early start on Sunday as they take on the Brighton Marathon.

This year’s race will start at 9.45am on April 7 with the thousands beginning their 26.2-mile challenge at Preston Park.

Route

The route is much the same as last year's, starting in Preston Park and heading up to Withdean, before snaking through the city centre.

Runners will then head out towards Ovingdean before making their way back along the seafront, into New Church Road before finishing on Hove Lawns.

Last year's gruelling stretch in Shoreham Port where many runners say they hit "the wall" has been removed - and extra sections along Madeira Drive and Lewes Road keep people close to the city centre.

Travel

Participants travelling to Brighton from outside of the city are urged to check their journeys ahead of time.

Preston Park railway station will be closed until 11am and trains to Brighton are expected to be busier than usual.

Govia Thameslink Railway, the operator in charge of Thameslink and Southern services, has urged passengers to leave plenty of extra time as there could be a queuing system in place at Brighton station.

There are a number of road closures at various times throughout the day.

Roads affected include A259 Marine Parade, A23 London Road/Preston Road, A270 Lewes, A259 Kingsway, Grand Parade and many more.

Toilets and water points

There are toilets and water points throughout the route. The map has the full details, but toilet locations include Surrenden Crescent, near St Peter's Church, New Church Road, Greenways, Black Rock and many more.

Water points are in Gloucester Place, New Church Road, Leicester Villas, Marine Parade near Chichester Place and many more.

Finish line

The finish line is at Hove Lawns, near the Peace Statue. Runners are told to keep moving through the finish area to prevent their muscles from seizing up and avoiding congestion. First aiders from St John Ambulance workers will be there to assist anyone who needs medical attention.
