A dilapidated sports pavilion is in line for a transformation.
Adur District Council wants to demolish the building in Shoreham’s Buckingham Park, which is used by Shoreham RFC and others on a pay-and-play basis, and turn it into a modern facility.
The local authority will replace the existing building, in Upper Shoreham Road, to provide new, modern toilets and sports facilities including changing rooms and a larger cafe.
Storage for sports equipment will also be created, removing the need for shipping containers elsewhere in the park.
The cafe will have a terrace area with a view over the sports pitches and the playground and building materials that are resistant to vandalism and arson are to be used so that the pavilion will be long-lasting.
The council said the building has “let down” the rest of the park aesthetically for some time and fails to meet the needs of its users. The toilets are of a poor standard and the building itself needs constant maintenance due to its age.

A council spokesman said: “After weeks of reviewing your feedback and implementing it into the designs, we have sent our application to replace the existing, tired building and provide new, modern toilets and sports facilities, including changing rooms and a larger cafe.
“Feedback on the initial round of public consultation has now ended. We’d like to thank everyone who’s helped shape the revised designs, whether you attended our engagement event or sent us a comment online.”
The council is aiming for the new facility to be completed by summer 2025 and said its next step is to select a contractor who can bring the new community facility to life.
It said it will continue to work in close contact with The Friends of Buckingham Park and the other key stakeholders of the park and cafe as the project progresses.
