People are being forced to “run a gauntlet” across a busy B-road.
Residents are calling for a crossing across Avis Road which connects the A259 and A26 in Denton, Newhaven.
Bus stops were recently moved and councillors say that a safe crossing should be built nearby to keep people safe.
East Sussex County Council said it has noted the concerns but has limited funding to build a crossing.
Newhaven Town councillor Lindsey Macleod said: "For too long, residents have run a gauntlet across the road. It shouldn't take for someone to be seriously injured or worst killed before the county council takes action.

“Residents are calling for change, and with the bus stop changes, now is the perfect time."
Cllr Macleod said there has been a number of near misses and accidents involving pedestrians and vehicles on the stretch of road.
A previous petition was launched in 2020 which was signed by nearly 200 people in the area.
A spokeswoman for the county council said: “We have noted the concerns raised about road safety on Avis Road, and will consider the petition relating to the installation of a pedestrian crossing when it is received.
"However, we have a finite amount of funding to develop local road safety and transport improvements across the county, and need to ensure that our resources are used on schemes that will have the greatest benefit to our local communities.
“An extension to the current 30mph speed limit along Avis Road in Newhaven as far as the A26, was approved at the lead member for transport and environment meeting on Monday, March 11. We anticipate that the design phase for this project will be completed this calendar year and the scheme implemented by spring 2025.”
In January, councillors called for a speed warning and mirrors to be installed on a “dangerous” bend in nearby Denton Road near the Flying Fish pub.
They also said school children are being “put at risk” and called for Denton to be brought down to a 20mph limit.
That road runs near to Denton Community Primary School.
