A 45-year-old man sustained life-threatening injuries and was taken to hospital after being assaulted near St Bartholomew's Church in Brighton on Thursday.
Police were called to the scene at Ann Street at 2.17pm on Thursday, March 7 and an investigation is now underway.
Sussex Police said there is no threat to the wider community, although local residents can expect to see an increased police presence in the area.
Witnesses or anyone with information have been asked to report online or call 101 quoting serial 666 of 07/03.
