People have expressed concerns over plans to build new homes and an additional flat at the site of a property.

Homes Sussex Ltd is proposing a change to the lower ground floor of 85 Beaconsfield Villas, in Brighton, to add an extra flat and two semi-detached homes to the rear of the property.

The house was once a single household however it has since been divided up into six flats.

In the planning documents, the developer said: "These dwellings would meaningfully contribute towards meeting identified local housing needs whilst protecting the character of the area."

Since the plans were submitted last year, people living in the area have opposed the proposals over fears of "overdevelopment".

One person said: "I object to this development as it would have an adverse impact on an already busy road in what is a conservation area. There would be a reduction of green spaces, restriction of view for neighbours, pressure on local services, added traffic and parking saturation.

"Positioned towards the top of the hill, these houses will be very visible from all directions."

Another person said: " This will completely destroy the feel of our neighbourhood and alter the sense of large park-like living all of us in the surrounding buildings experience and value highly, as our view southwards will be blocked.

"This would have an immediate and detrimental effect on the quality of life in the surrounding properties."

Another person who lives in the area said: "The addition of traffic in the area is a concern on an already busy road.

"This road links three schools, one college and numerous daycare centres, so would be a potential additional danger to children walking to school."

A decision is set to be made by March 6.
