Gourmet Burger Kitchen (GBK) is one of those classic, reliable chains. You always know you’ll get a good meal there.
So when GBK invited us to try out their burgers and announce their £2 children’s meal deal I was looking forward to it.
Though I am a fan, I hadn’t visited for a while and was interested to see how the menu had changed.
For starters, the vegetarian and vegan options have got a lot better with three burger options instead of just one bean burger.
And the variety of sides is great. They still have their classic skinny and chunky fries, but there is also halloumi, sweet potato and truffle-flavoured options.
The Brighton branch, in Gardner Street, is spacious and brightly lit.
GBK’s signature yellow is in accents in the decor, but much of the restaurant is furnished with blue and red seating and wooden panelling. From the street it looks welcoming, especially at peak times when nearly every seat is full.
Of course we couldn’t skip the milkshakes and ordered one each – Oreo and strawberry.
Both were delicious and you can taste that the ingredients are high quality – they are thick and creamy. You could almost save it for dessert.
But we powered through and tucked in to our burgers.
I chose the Californian burger, a vegan burger with a Quorn chicken fillet, vegan smoked cheese, smashed avocado, relish, mayo and salad.
The smashed avocado was packed with lime which gave it a nice tang and balanced well with the sweetness of the relish.
My partner ordered the classic GBK Cheese and Bacon which had a beef burger, crispy bacon, dill pickles and relish. He chose West Country cheddar but you could also have American cheese.
We ordered skinny fries and truffle fries to share. The skinny fries were perfect – salty and crisp.
The truffle fries were chunky skin on fries, topped with truffle mayo and finely grated cheese. They were very rich and filling – we probably could have shared one portion.
The staff were lovely, polite and attentive but not overly so.
With affordable prices, delicious food and a relaxed atmosphere, you can't really go wrong.
Burgers start at £8.50 and sides cost as little as £3.25. The milkshakes cost £5.75.
