Brighton is the most LGBTQ+-friendly city for students outside of London, according to a new study.
Research by University Compare analysed more than 40 UK student cities to determine their friendliness to the LGBTQ+ community.
The study compared the size of the LGBTQ+ population, as well as the number of recorded LGBTQ+ hate crimes, the number of LGBTQ+ social groups and clubs, and search interest in the city’s annual Pride event.
Brighton placed second only to London, with Cambridge placing third in the study.
Top ten LGBTQ+ friendly UK cities for students
- London
- Brighton
- Cambridge
- Manchester
- Edinburgh
- Oxford
- Nottingham
- Bristol
- Bournemouth
- Liverpool
While standing out for the largest LGBTQ+ population in the UK, ranking first for search interest in its Pride event and placing joint first for its nightlife, Brighton missed out on the top spot due to a lower ranking for safety.
A spokesman for University Compare said: “Choosing a university is a big decision and understanding the inclusivity of its city is equally crucial.
“Our research into key aspects of LGBTQ+ life aims to empower students to make an informed choice about their education and potential new home.
“We believe that every student deserves to study in an environment where they can be their authentic selves and we look forward to helping this year’s cohort of prospective students find a place where they can live, learn and belong.”
