Volk's Railway has been named "railway of the year".

The Brighton seafront attraction picked up the honour at the annual Heritage Railway Association ceremony.

Volk's is the oldest operating electric railway in the world and won the title despite being up against 200 others across the UK.

Councillor Alan Robins, chairman of the city council's culture, heritage, sport, tourism and economic development committee, said: "The Volk’s Railway is a truly unique and important part of Brighton and Hove’s heritage and a much-loved attraction for residents and visitors alike.

"This win is fantastic news and a fitting tribute to the staff and volunteers who work so hard to keep the railway running."

In August, Volk's celebrated its 140th anniversary.

The council said the award, which was presented at a ceremony in Brighton, recognises the "rich history" of Volk's.

James Barton, manager of the railway, said: "Winning railway of the year is a tremendous honour and we’re absolutely thrilled to receive this recognition.

"I would like to thank our wonderful staff and volunteers whose passion and dedication are without parallel.

"I’d also like to thank all of our visitors. Their support not only upholds the legacy of our railway but also plays a pivotal role in preserving the rich history and charm that make Volk's Electric Railway an integral part of Brighton's cultural heritage."

The railway is set to reopen on March 29 for this year's spring and summer season.
