A couple’s proposal was witnessed by millions on live TV before a crunch Albion match.
Television cameras captured the moment Malcolm Bashford got down on one knee in the tunnel of the Amex Stadium to ask Candice Konig to be his wife.
The couple, both 52 and from Brighton, work as stewards in the tunnel on matchdays and have known each other for five years.
It was just another shift for them both ahead of Brighton’s 0-0 draw against Wolves on Monday night.
But Malcolm had a surprise for his partner of two years.
His now-fiancée Candice told The Argus: “It’s a lovely place to work, a wonderful club. This was way before the match. The club have been brilliant, they are a wonderful club to work for. It is an amazing place and that is why it was really special for us.
“We have lost three members who we worked with in the tunnel and that’s why he chose to do it there. My best friend worked in the tunnel with us and she passed away in March.
“We’re both quite private people, people were coming up to us and messaging because they saw it on the telly.
“I prefer to be behind-the-scenes. It was lovely but was a bit of a shock to us all.
“Malcolm told our boss in the tunnel and one of the stewards, he was just going to ask me in the tunnel when not many people were there. He picked a quiet time.
“Somebody came to get me but I said I was busy with work, they tried to get me down there. I said I couldn’t do both jobs, I got there and he came along. So many people were there and it was caught on camera.
“We met at the football, we have known each other about five years.”
TNT Sports broadcast the moment during its Monday night football coverage.
Pundits Lynsey Hipgrave, former England striker Peter Crouch and former Seagulls midfielder Steve Sidwell described it as a “lovely moment” on TV.
