A vigil will be held on the anniversary of the death of a man who was attacked outside a nightclub.

Jay Abatan was attacked exactly 25 years ago today outside Ocean Rooms nightclub in Morley Street, Brighton.

He had gone out to celebrate a job promotion

The 42-year-old died five days later of his injuries on January 29, 1999.

Family and friends will gather outside Brighton Police Station in John Street on Sunday to remember Jay and call for justice in their campaign.

His younger brother Michael Abatan, who was also attacked on that night, has always believed it was racially motivated.

He told The Argus: “It is coming up to 25 years since Jay was attacked. What we know is there are witnesses out there that are afraid to come forward.

“The investigation that the family has been doing has revealed that the group of men who killed my brother were drinking with Sussex Police officers that night.

“Jay was a hardworking family man.

“I always think of Jay every day, it has not left me one single day. The rest of my life I will still try to get justice for Jay.”

The vigil will take place between 2pm and 3pm.
