A parking warden has been criticised for “adding insult to injury” after giving a broken-down car a ticket.

The vehicle had stopped on double yellow lines and was clearly undrivable, with the front wheel at a 45 degree angle.

Now a council spokesman has apologised for the parking fine, saying it had been “issued by mistake” and would be cancelled.

The car broke down in  St Margaret's Road, St Leonards, and it appeared the front axle had detached from it.

A traffic warden issued the Peugeot with a Penalty Charge Notice.

A photo of the car posted on social media sparked criticism, with people saying the ticket “added insult to injury”.

Many called for the fine to be cancelled.

A spokeswoman for East Sussex County Council, which is responsible for on-street parking in St Leonards, said: “Our contractors are instructed not to issue PCNs to vehicles in circumstances like these.

“This has clearly been issued by mistake and will be cancelled. We would like to apologise for any inconvenience this may have caused.”
