A pharmacist who frequently goes beyond the call of duty is to receive a prestigious accolade at the Palace of Westminster for his work.
Shabbir Jafferali, owner of Wilmshurst Pharmacy in Lancing, is renowned for not only providing health care but for taking a genuine interest in the health and wellbeing of everyone in his community.
He takes the time to know the names and ailments of his customers and treats everyone with sensitivity and care.
When he discovered a recently bereaved person's blood pressure had suddenly become dangerously high, he attended the pharmacy all weekend to take blood pressure readings and to provide advice and support.
When another customer broke down in the pharmacy, he made time to help them recover, offering support and true kindness.
Shabbir, who has been a pharmacist for more than four decades, tries to ease the strain on the NHS by providing quality care at his chemist, but also has a concern for people's emotional wellbeing.
He is now one of 28 people to be recognised at the Palace of Westminster with the prestigious British Citizen Award (BCA) on Thursday.
“This year’s medallists have reminded us of how many amazing people are supporting our communities, especially during such a challenging time,” said Stephanie Wood, from BCA partner One Stop.
“At One Stop we serve many communities across the country, and we know how important voluntary work is to support those in need.
“We're proud to be partnering with the BCA again and to play a small part in helping each medallist to be recognised. Our congratulations go to all honourees.”

The medal presentation will be hosted by TV presenter Matt Allwright and attended by BCA patrons Dame Mary Perkins, founder of Specsavers, and The Rt Hon Lord Dholakia.
The award was established in 2015 “to recognise exceptional individuals who work tirelessly and selflessly to make a positive impact on their communities and society”, a spokesman said.
Each winner is presented with their award at the palace and then takes part in an opn-top lap of honour tour provided by Big Bus London before attending a certificate presentation at the Church House, in Westminster.
