Brighton Council gives recycling advice as bins overflow

The bins in Preston Park, Brighton, were so full the rubbish spread all over the path and the mountain of cardboard boxes was over 6ft high. 

These pictures were taken on Boxing Day - but the city council has already cleared the mess.

It has given advice on how to recycle wrapping paper, gift bags and boxes properly.

It has said people can put wrapping paper, gift bags and tags loose in a mixed recycling bin - but anything covered in foil or glitter must be put in the general waste.

A spokesman said: "The festive season inevitably leads to a great deal of waste and we’d like to help make sure we’re recycling as much as possible.

"Remember, everything recycled should be kept clean and dry. We can’t collect recycling in plastic bags or bin liners so make sure to keep it loose."

Wine bottles and chutney jars were also stacked high in the park and they can all be recycled with the metal lid.

Biscuit tins and chocolate tubs can be recycled at household waste recycling sites such as the one in Old Shoreham Road, Hove.

Collection days for recycling have changed over Christmas and New Year and have all been shifted one working day forward. Collections return to normal on Monday, January 15.

There are Christmas tree recycling points across Brighton until Monday, January 22.

Homeless charity Off The Fence can collect trees from homes for a charitable donation.
