Hundreds of people witnessed a historic light switch on at a refurbished Grade II* listed lido.
Saltdean Lido has not had an illuminated sign since 1942 when it was taken down due to the risk of being bombed during the Second World War.
People gathered in front of the lido for the big switch on event on Friday and yesterday evening.
Saltdean Lido Community Interest Company, the group that saved the building ten years ago, said it has repossessed the building and certain sections should be opening in January.
Derek Leaver, SLCIC chairman, said: “Over two nights we probably had over 600 people, people were very excited to see it all.
“The light was put up in 1939 and taken down in 1942. It was on the flight path of the German Luftwaffe.
“They were taken down and lost. This is the first time in 80 years that an illuminated sign has been put on the lido so it was quite a historic event.
“Saltdean residents and the public were delighted to see the entire building lit up. People can see now we are nearing completion. There is a lot of anticipation and excitement from the community.
“We had a raffle with the children so on both nights a child turned the lights on. We had a choir as well.
“The switch on signifies that we are on the last hurdle now. We have taken possession of the building now so are focusing on the fitting out the cafe, gym and library. We will be opening the building as soon as bits are ready before we have a grand opening some time next year.”
The Argus was invited to the building two years ago just before work to clear asbestos started.
SLCIC hopes to have the gym, café and library opening by the end of January.
The ballroom which will be used for events is expected to open later next year.
