A seafront hotel is auctioning off its old furniture as it prepares for refurbishment.

The Grand in Brighton will be refurbished from January next year, and to clear space for new items the hotel has decided to sell off its furniture.

Beds, bedside tables, wardrobes, desks, and chairs are among the items that will be on sale.

The hotel is working with Pro Auction, a hospitality auctioneers company, to flog its wares.

“We are thrilled to offer our customers the chance to own a part of The Grand Brighton’s opulence,” said Simon Rose, managing director of Pro Auction.

“This is an exceptional opportunity to acquire furniture from one of the city’s most iconic hotels.”

The 159-year-old hotel has 201 rooms spread over seven floors and still has its original staircase.

Celebrities, politicians and film and sitcom productions – including a 1992 episode of Only Fools and Horses, have graced the hotel’s halls.

The King’s Road hotel, which opened in 1864, was bombed by the IRA during the Conservative party conference in 1984.

Five people died and 34 were injured in the attack aimed at the then-Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher and her cabinet.

The renovation next year follows previous ones in 2013 and 2019.

In 2019, the Victorian façade of the hotel was fully restored, alongside the original design features of the property, including the emerald marble pillars in the lobby and ornate cornices in the bar and restaurant.

As part of the renovation, all 201 guest bedrooms will be upgraded.

Leonardo Hotels, formerly Jury’s Inn, acquired The Grand in February this year.

Fattal Group, owner of Leonardo Hotels, announced it bought the hotel from Wittington Investments, which had previously Wittington bought The Grand from De Vere for £50 million in 2014.

With two other hotels in the city, the deal made Leonardo the largest hotel operator in Brighton.

An auction will take place at the hotel on December 19, and those interested will also be able to bid online. with online bidding also available.

Subsequent sales will happen every five weeks, starting in March.

The live auction sale takes place at the hotel and starts at 10am.
