The full list of candidates running in next month’s South Portslade by-election has been revealed.
The by-election has been triggered by the sudden resignation of long-standing Labour councillor Les Hamilton, who had served residents of the ward for more than 50 years.
Mr Hamilton said: “It has been a tremendous honour to be able to make a difference for local people.
“As residents in my ward will know, I am a staunch champion of Portslade where I have lived for over 75 years.
“Age has now caught up with me and tells me it’s time to slow down and give up being a councillor.”
Voters will go to the polls on January 11 to elect his replacement.
The ward has traditionally been one of the strongest areas of support for Labour in the city, but some residents in Portslade have expressed anger and frustration over council proposals to close a school in the area.
Seven candidates are standing in the South Portslade by-election:
- Danny Booth, Green Party
- Benjamin Franks, Conservative Party
- Jamie Gillespie, Independent
- Josh Guilmant, Labour
- David Maples, Trade Unionist and Socialist Coalition (TUSC)
- Georgia McKinley-Fitch, Democratic Liberation Party
- Kenneth Rist, Liberal Democrats
Residents must be registered to vote by December 21 to cast their ballot on election day. People can register to vote at gov.uk/register-to-vote.
