Floods of strangers were responsible for hundreds of meals ordered to a single table in a Wetherspoons pub tonight.

Customers in their local Wetherspoons pub can post a photograph of themselves along with their table number to the Wetherspoons the Game page on Facebook.

Strangers can then send drinks and food to the table and the results are usually pretty hilarious.

In fact the game recently hit headlines when a man took his grandparents to a The George Inn, in Chesire, and posted a message game’s Facebook page and invited people to send a nightcap for his folks.

But moments later, the first of around a dozen of pints of lager and glasses of wine arrived at the table and images of the results have since gone viral on social media.

However, the game’s creator, Chris Illman, also uses his page to help people in need, as he did in Brighton on Monday (December 11).

He challenged the 550,000 people following WetherSpoons the Game on Facebook to order 200 lots of sausage and mash meals and 200 bottles of Pepsi to table 70 of The Brighthelm, in West Street, as quickly as possible.

It took little over 12 minutes to reach the target. The meals were boxed up and taken to the Old Steine for homeless people to collect in partnership with Sussex Homeless Support.

“It’s the ninth one we’ve done now and it’s amazing to see people get involved,” said Chris.

“I said I’d get a spoon tattooed on me when we reached 10,000 likes on the Facebook. Then I said I’d change my middle name to Spoon if we reached 500,000.

“I’m soon to become Chris Spoon Illman.”

Chris said the most successful event he ran was in Liverpool, which saw players spend a whopping £6,000 on food for the homeless.

“We decided to put a limit on it after that and see how quickly we could reach a target, rather than how much we could reach.”
