Two boys were approached by a larger group and threatened with a knife.
The boys, both under 16, were at an alley between Station Approach and Cornwallis Terrace in Hastings.
One of the boys was assaulted during the incident.
It happened just before 5.30pm on November 22 and now police are appealing for witnesses or anyone with information to come forward.
A spokeswoman for Sussex Police said: “In particular, we are keen to hear from anyone who saw or who has footage of the larger group of young people involved.
“This includes residents with any CCTV in the area, particularly in Braybrooke Terrace, Cornwallis Gardens, Cornwallis Terrace, and Cambridge Gardens to come forward.
“Information can be reported to Sussex Police online or call 101 and quote serial 1079 of 22/11.”
