A pub had to be evacuated as firefighters tackled a blaze in a nearby flat.
Crews were called to Farm Road, Hove, at around 5pm this evening.
Four fire engines attended the flat fire which was believed to be in a courtyard set back from the road.
Coopers Cask pub shut for the night and was evacuated as crews dealt with the blaze nearby.
Firefighters started leaving the scene at 8pm but will reinspect the area later this evening.
A spokeswoman for East Sussex Fire and Rescue Service said: “We were called at 5.04pm on November 29 to reports of a fire at a domestic property in Farm Road, Hove.
“Four fire engines have been sent to the scene and crews are using breathing apparatus, two hose reel jets and firefighting foam to tackle the fire. Steady progress is being made.
“Members of the public are asked to avoid the area.”
The fire was put out by 6.20pm and the fire service confirmed there were no injuries.
