Train passengers will benefit from an improved service across the county as part of a new timetable change - with some stations seeing three times as many trains.

Rail bosses have announced the latest timetable change with a huge benefit for commuters and clubbers alike.

The lesser-served Preston Park and Hassocks railway stations on the Brighton Main Line will have an extra six services stop in the morning and evening peak after feedback from passengers.

This means a doubling of peak services to London Bridge and the central Thameslink core which connects north and south London.

In the morning, the trains will leave Brighton five minutes earlier than currently, to arrive in London at the same time.

What this means:

The current 06:14am, 06:44am, 07:14am, 07:44am, 08:14am and 08:44am departures from Brighton to Cambridge are retimed to leave five minutes earlier and call additionally at Hassocks and Preston Park.

This means they will leave Brighton at 06:09am, 06:39am, 07:09am, 07:39am, 08:09am and 08:39am.

In the evening peak, the 14:53pm, 15:23pm, 15:53pm, 16:23pm,16:53pm and 17:24pm departures from Cambridge to Brighton will call additionally at Hassocks and Preston Park.

These trains will depart from London Bridge to Brighton at 16:15pm, 16:45pm, 17:15pm, 17:45pm, 18:15pm, 18:45pm, arriving in Brighton three minutes later than currently - 21 and 51 past the hour rather than 18 and 48.

The Southern services to and from London Victoria will continue unchanged.

At Newhaven Harbour, trains between Brighton and Seaford will provide an hourly service all day, stepping up to half-hourly at busier times.

This means an almost three-fold increase from 18 to 53 services per day, meeting new demand for the area as hundreds of new homes have been built, along with activity in and around the port.

Jenny Saunders, customer services director at GTR - which runs Southern, Thameslink and Gatwick Express - said: “We’re constantly listening to our passengers and local communities, and these improvements are designed to meet demand where they tell us it’s needed most, help communities grow, and attract new customers to rail.”

People who live in Glynde and Berwick who want to spend evenings in Brighton will be able to stay out an hour and a half longer with the new timetable.

The last train from Brighton to Eastbourne on weekdays and Saturdays – the 11:32pm service – will now also stop at Glynde and Berwick.

Currently the last train serving these stations leaves Brighton at 9.56pm.

As demand also increases on the Horsham to London Victoria services via Sutton, the 8.17am service from Horsham will be extended from five to eight carriages.

Several Saturday services have also been lengthened from five to eight or 10 carriages.
