Roof works on a Harvester restaurant which was gutted in a blaze are due to start.

The building in Coastguard Road, Littlehampton, went up in flames on August 10 as a kitchen fire spread to the roof.

Since then, the restaurant and neighbouring centre the Windmill Entertainment complex have been closed to the public.

Demolition started as planned November 9 but since then the weather has been bad and “far too dangerous” to have anyone working on the roof, Arun District Council said.

However, progress has been made with removing the damaged joists and some internal services.

A spokesman for the council said: “Due to the weather conditions, work is progressing, but slowly.

“The wind and rain has had a knock-on effect to scheduled tasks as some cannot happen out of sequence.

“The contractors have finished demolishing the Harvester and weathering to the party wall has been completed.”

A roofer is booked for late next week, weather permitting.
