Weather experts are heading to Sussex today to investigate reports of a possible tornado during Storm Ciarán.
Residents and business owners reported damage from strong winds in the village of Sompting, Lancing, with tiles thrown from roofs and debris scattered across roads.
CCTV caught the moment that the suspected tornado tore through part of an industrial estate.
Experts from the Tornado and Storm Research Organisation (Torro) are set to investigate the damage caused in Lancing later today to determine if the event was tornadic in nature.
A tornado was also reported in Jersey in the Channel Islands yesterday as Storm Ciaran caused extensive damage with winds of more than 100mph.
A spokeswoman for Torro said: “There is obviously a lot of interest in the intense Jersey tornado and other probable and possible tornadoes over the last couple of days.
“Torro are all volunteers with jobs external to the organisation, who are currently juggling many reports with work during continuing severe weather.
“As a research organisation, we ensure that we don’t rush to conclusions and that, before we confirm whether an event was tornadic and the ratings of any tornado, we look at all available evidence.”
