A building in the city centre has been declared unsafe after sustaining damage in Storm Ciarán.
The branch of Boots in North Street, Brighton, has been damaged by the strong winds that battered the south coast of England overnight.
According to police, parts of the corrugated roof have come loose and have been blowing around in the wind.
Businesses within the cordon cannot be accessed.
The road has been closed in both directions, with slow traffic reported in the area between Queens Road and King Place.
A police cordon is in place around the area, with buses diverted as a result of the road closure.
The cordon now includes the Clock Tower junction, with repairs being carried out this afternoon.
Brighton and Hove Buses have urged passengers to check their website for the latest information about disruption and diversion to their services.
Brighton and Hove City Council have said they hope to reopen the junction later this evening.
A police spokeswoman said: "Police were called to North Street, Brighton today at around 10.30am following reports of debris falling from the roof of a building.
"After arriving at the scene, the road has been partially closed and a cordon has been placed around the area from the Clock Tower to Poundland on North Street.
"There is currently no vehicle or pedestrian access running through North Street, Queens Road or West Street.
"Police and Highways remain on scene and are monitoring the situation.
"We ask that you please avoid the area and take alternate routes while emergency services and partners work to ensure the building is made safe."
UPDATE: North Street has now reopened.
