A storm is set to bring damaging winds and heavy rain to Sussex this week.

The Met Office has extended its current yellow weather warning for rain, which came into force from midnight on Saturday, until 6pm on Monday.

The previous warning, which covered more of the South East, was due to end at 11.59pm tonight.

Sussex will have a short reprieve before another yellow weather warning for rain comes into force at 6pm on Wednesday with the arrival of Storm Ciarán.

This weather warning is due to end at 11.59pm on Thursday.

What to expect

  • Delays or cancellations to train and bus services are possible
  • Homes and businesses could be flooded, causing damage to some buildings
  • Some communities may be cut off by flooded roads
  • Fast flowing or deep floodwater is possible, causing a danger to life

A yellow weather warning for wind will also join the mix from midnight on Thursday until 6pm the same day.

The Met Office said: “Very strong and potentially damaging winds associated with Storm Ciarán are possible on Thursday.”

  • There is a slight chance that damage to buildings and homes could occur, with roofs blown off and power lines brought down
  • There is a small chance that flying debris will result in a danger to life
  • There is a small chance that injuries and danger to life could occur from large waves and beach material being thrown on to sea fronts, coastal roads and properties
  • There is a small chance that roads, bridges and railway lines could close, with delays and cancellations to bus, train, ferry services and flights
