Thousands of runners enjoyed the first day of the Beachy Head Marathon despite torrential rain and strong winds.
Runners set off from Dukes Drive in Eastbourne, past the village of Jevington, through Friston Forest, into Alfriston and Litlington before making their way across the Seven Sisters Cliffs back to Eastbourne.
The cross country marathon, which is one of the most popular in the UK, includes 300 steps, 14 gates and the equivalent elevation of 1,318m along the South Downs National Park route.
Runners were cheered on by crowds in Litlington as they reached the 16 mile mark.
The first finishers for the marathon and 31 mile ultra marathon were announced by around 12pm.
Runners could be seen running down the hill from Alfriston Road, near Seaford, and alongside the Cuckmere River.
Runners vary from beginners, walkers to world class runners.
A flood alert was issued for the Cuckmere River but the warning was removed by 10.40am.
The half marathon takes place tomorrow morning.
